Girls’ Generation’s Status Has Been Solidified Once Again

In an online community board, a few pictures were uploaded with a title of “How Sunbae Idols Talk about Girls’ Generation.”
It is a compilation of quotes from the first generation idols such as S.E.S., Fin.K.L, and BoA talking about Girls’ Generation.
S.E.S.’ Eugene showed extraordinary love for the girls by saying, “When I look at Girls’ Generation, it feels like I’m looking at us during our first years. I think the cuteness adds on to that.” Both of these two girl groups have captured all male fans’ hearts with their concept of “fairy”.
Fin.K.L’s Ock Joohyun also showed her unusual love for the girls by saying, “Girls’ Generation is a very pretty painting that makes me reminisce about my old days.” Sung Yuri also highly praised the girls’ beauty and said, “I have a personal friendship with Girls’ Generation, but that is not the only reason that I say they are beautiful even in the eyes of a woman.”
Fin.K.L’s Lee Hyori made a cool comment at a fan signing event by saying, “You still like Fin. K.L? Switch over to Girls’ Generation,” and took Girls’ Generation’s side.
BoA, who has been very active in “K-pop Star” recently, revealed her desire to be part of Girls’ Generation when she was asked, “If you had a time machine and you went back to when you were 13 years old, would you choose to become a singer again?” by replying, “I would choose to sing, but I won’t choose to be BoA. I had a hard time overseas alone. I want to become the oldest member in Girls’ Generation. You may think that we have a large age difference, but we’re only three years apart.”
With these comments made by the sunbae idols, netizens commented, “The sunbaes like Girls’ Generation because they are very polite”, “Whatever the reason is, it has been confirmed that Girls’ Generation is at the top of the female idol list in Korea”, “As expected, Girls’ Generation are even more recognized by their sunbaes!”

Taeyeon Enters ‘Miss Korea’ Beauty Pageant

Taeyeon recently made headlines by participating in the 2012 “Miss Korea” beauty pageant. It was an unprecedented event, as no music idol had ever entered the traditional beauty pageant. Despite never having competed in a beauty pageant before, Taeyeon continued Girls’ Generation’s track record of success in outside ventures as she finished as a finalist.
The “Miss Korea” judges were highly impressed with Taeyeon, noting that she was able to make it to the finals despite being different from the traditional beauty queens. One judge elaborated by saying, “Most beauty queens are very tall, trim, and elegant. Even though Taeyeon is short and rather dorky, she displayed so much charm that we found ourselves voting for her more often than not.”
One aspect of the pageant’s contests that Taeyeon excelled in was the interview. The most memorable answer that Taeyeon gave was in response to the question, “What is a personal dream that you want to achieve within the next five years?” Taeyeon stunned the audience with her generous and heartwarming answer as she said, “What I want more than anything is for there to be world dukongs.”

You know… world peas…

Mamonde Releases New CFs Featuring Yuri

Cosmetic brand Mamonde has aired a new CF featuring Yuri, in which she is listening to advice on how to attract a man. The narrator lists methods such as wearing makeup and smiling politely, but Yuri realizes that a simpler solution to the complex problem is just to cut ten centimeters off the bottom of her dress. The CF compares this situation to using “Total Solution”, a moisture cream from Mamonde meant to serve as a simple solution for complex skin problems.
Mamonde has also released another video from the set of a Mamonde CF filming. In the video, Yuri mentions that she is the new model for Mamonde and talks about Mamonde’s “Refreshing Cucumber Pack”, saying that the product has the same texture as homemade cucumber packs and that it’s possible to feel the cucumber and its effects on the skin. Yuri also gives several cucumber packs as gifts to the staff working with her for the CF.

Jessica Shows Her Unique Color in @star1 Magazine

Recently, Jessica did an interview with celebrity lifestyle magazine @star1 in which she talked about her experiences with photo shoots, working on her drama “Wild Romance”, and her real self.
Q: How did you feel about doing a photo shoot alone on a rainy street?
A: I did a few photo shoots in the rain before, so it wasn’t that hard. However, I was a bit lonely because I rarely do photo shoots alone and I had no other members to play with.
Q: Do you usually like the rain?
A: I didn’t like the rain when I was young…but recently I started to really like it. Sometimes, I enjoy the feeling of listening to rain-themed songs on rainy days.
Q: How are you doing after the drama “Wild Romance”?
A: I’m currently resting. I’m enjoying the rare moments of sweet relaxation since I’m not part of a musical or a regular member of a variety show. I meet up with my friends and acquaintances. I’ve also visited my family members in San Francisco.
Q: You made an attempt at a serious drama with “Wild Romance”. How was it?
A: It was very interesting. I would do it again if I got another chance. The drama itself wasn’t hard, but I had so many difficulties trying to organize all my schedules because I had a lot of international performances. Adding on to that, I didn’t have enough time to prepare myself because the decision was made on such short notice. For that reason, I felt like I didn’t show everything I could do. It was hard but enjoyable work. I found it very interesting to create an emotional plot and carry it through. It was difficult in some aspects considering the fact that the character had a lot of inconsistency regarding her emotions, but I enjoyed the challenge. I want to do a bubbly or a melodramatic character next time.
Q: I assume that you were a bit burdened by the Korean language, which is still slightly difficult. How did you handle the script?
A: Daily conversations are not hard at all. It’s the difficult words in the script such as…hmm…old sayings or anything related to legal matters that were hard to understand. However, I was happy to be able to learn more Korean while filming the drama.
Q: From Jessica’s point of view, singing and acting: what are the differences?
A: Many celebrities talk about their sense of ecstasy on stage, but I think I’m a bit different. Personally, I like listening to my own voice inside headphones. The sound of my voice streaming out from the radio gives me an odd feeling. I think that feeling is what stimulates me and gives me a sense of joy.
Q: Many members of Girls’ Generation are now doing solo promotions and individual activities.
A: I’m cheering them on. I feel proud. I.. have actually had a dilemma since my trainee years. I had always thought about what to choose and focus on between singing, acting and dancing. I even had a “slump” period because of this. “Dancing” is defined by Hyoyeon, “Singing” is defined by Taeyeon, and “Acting” is defined by Yoona… I had a hard time thinking about how I should characterize myself. But now, I’m different. I try to think positively about everything. I still want to experience a lot of things in many ways. Wouldn’t that eventually lead to a unique image of Jessica?

Q: There’s the Jessica image we all know, but I wonder what the “real” Jessica would be like.

A: I don’t get out of bed when I’m at home. I read, use the computer, listen to music, I even eat on the bed. I take care of everything on my bed. (Jessica is also known to be the sleepyhead in Girls’ Generation.) I don’t really like going outside. I like to wear comfortable clothes if I do go outside though.
Q: The name “Jessica” gives off a very stylish vibe.
A: Honestly, I don’t really like to decorate myself. I like comfortable fashion. The majority of the fashion items I look for on the internet are very basic. Knits, leggings, huge bags… These are the items I usually buy. I especially like shoes and bags, but my shoe size is 225 so it’s really hard to find a pair that matches. (Translator’s Note: In Korea, shoe sizes are measured in millimeters.)
Q: You look really thin. Do you have a dieting secret of your own?
A: I gained a lot of weight after the drama ended because I went around everywhere eating. During the filming period of the drama, I was around 40-41 kg. When I actually do go on a diet, I use a training technique that does not form muscles. Of course I also control what I eat, but I don’t follow it too often.
Q: You have been given the nickname “Ice Princess” since the debut days. Does this fancy and cold image burden you?
A: I personally like the nickname “Ice Princess”. But my actual personality is so different from my image that people who are close call me “Clumsy Jessica”. I don’t dislike the cold image though. I think it’s my unique advantage compared to others.
Q: It has already been five years since you debuted when you were in your teens. A lot of time has passed since then. What are some of the things that have changed?
A: It’s true that I held onto first place awards. I always had a greedy thought that I should most definitely focus on getting the award. Now, I think my field of vision has widened. The most important thing I think about is whether or not I, or Girls’ Generation, made a satisfying stage rather than hanging onto awards. Honestly I don’t really cling to awards anymore. I have also found the nerve to laugh off any negative articles. I think this is a peace of mind that time has taught me.

Yoona Impresses with Her Improved Acting Skills in ‘Love Rain’

[Warning, some spoilers ahead]
Yoona has been impressing with not only her incredible good looks, but also with her portrayal of two different characters in “Love Rain”. Now a third of the way through just her third drama, Yoona’s improved acting skills have been catching the eyes of critics.
Kim Yoonhee, the 70s college student, and Jung Hana, the bright and quirky present day girl, are polar opposites. The former is calm and deliberate, the latter cute and cheerful. As Yoon Ga-ee of OSEN writes of Yoona’s acting, “She doesn’t just put her pretty visuals forth. She has been capturing the screen with rich emotions and polished expressions. Viewers’ eyes can only be kind towards this ‘actress’ Yoona.” In her scenes as Kim Yoonhee, Yoona plays her character very calmly and exhibits her feelings with subtle facial expressions and movement that draw the audience into the serene setting that director Yoon Sukho has created.
The transition to the present day allowed Yoona to showcase her skills even more with the younger character, Jung Hana. Yoona’s natural exuberance flows freely through Hana, but her ability to effectively portray a wide range of emotions has improved dramatically. Choi Inkyung of Review Star says of Yoona, “Her laughing and crying, which was only pretty before, has certainly changed. She drew tears from viewers when she cried giving up on her first love, senior Taesung (Kim Youngkwang), and made viewers laugh with her awkward and funny body movements in front of the camera.” Indeed, Yoona is able to take the audience on an emotional roller coaster through her nuanced portrayal of Hana. She makes sure that a fully developed and deep character with many sides is shown. In the latest episode, Choi Inkyung says Yoona was prettier than ever, continuing, “Of course, it could have been her pretty clothes and makeup, but more than anything, her facial expressions and ever improving acting were the biggest reasons behind it. After always having carried the ‘idol origin’ label, Yoona is completely immersed in her character and has now become ‘Hana’ herself.”
“Love Rain” is Yoona’s third drama after “You Are My Destiny” and “Cinderella Man”. Even though she is a veteran singer in Girls’ Generation, she is still considered a rookie as an actress. Yoona’s improvement has come as a bit of a surprise for critics, not because it wasn’t possible, but because she improved in her acting while at the same time performing all around the world in Girls’ Generation. She has taken the criticism from her previous acting experiences and used it to become even better, practicing hard at every opportunity. Yoon Ga-ee writes, “The speed at which her acting is improving is blinding. She has matured to the point where you want to ask, ‘When did her acting get so good?’ The criticism that trailed behind her during ‘Cinderella Man’ is now nowhere to be found.”
Yoona has met the challenge of playing two different roles in the same drama. Perhaps the most impressive part of Yoona’s acting is the fact that she is breaking free of the “idol-actor” stereotype and showing that she can be considered simply as an actress rather than as an idol who also acts. The future is bright for actress Yoona.

Taeyeon and Tiffany to Appear on ‘Survival Audition K-Pop Star’

Taeyeon and Tiffany will appear in the next episode of “Survival Audition K-Pop Star” (“K-Pop Star”), in which they will collaborate with Baek Ahyeon, a semi-finalist in the reality-singing competition. Viewers of the show are especially looking forward to hearing the harmony the three singers will produce with their strong vocals.
Members of Girls’ Generation have already made several appearances on “K-Pop Star”.
