Recount of Girls’ Generation’s Appearance on ‘Kim Jungeun’s Chocolate’ in 2009 by PD

[Editor's note: Below, is a recount of what the PD of " Kim Jungeun's Chocolate", Lee Jiwon, decided for the episode which featured Girls' Generation back on the 15th of August, 2009, as well as how he felt during the preparation for it.]

This is how it started.

I wanted to make a unique stage, starting with “Gee” and ending with “Tell Me Your Wish”, since it was a special episode. No one can ever get sick of these two songs, but I wanted to show a new side of the girls other than the ones that viewers can see in normal music programs. SM agreed with my idea and the girls started to practice in the midst of their killer schedules.
“Gee” was rearranged to a version that starts with a piano-jazz-like piece and continues on into a strong, rock-like version. We also prepared a six minute non-stop dance battle that shows the power only Girls’ Generation has. Apart from that, close attention was paid to the members who were hidden behind other members such as maknae Seohyun’s piano solo and the dancing queen Hyoyeon’s power stage. We were worried that all the effort would not be shown to their entirety and worked hard to correct and edit one move, or one facial expression, to make a perfect stage. Also, the musical part of the stages were prepared so that we wouldn’t be shamed anywhere in the music industry.
Even after all that work, I felt that it wasn’t enough. The girls’ appeals are not only in their songs, but in their personalities too. I didn’t want to waste time asking for their ideal types so that what people called, “Variety Talk”, could be discussed. That wasn’t the “Chocolate” I was thinking about. This is also because of the fact that all of these trivial things are known to people since Girls’ Generation is the nations’ sister group. I wanted to make it meaningful for the viewers and also help the girls at the same time.
This thought became more solid when I met them in the band practice room to practice the song. They were the same as other twenty year-olds who laugh freely, chatter, and pull pranks on one another. Even if I was only there for an hour or so, it was enough for me to see and confirm the fact that they each have their own personalities, how close they are to each other, and how much they care for each other. The thought that said “I want to show this” flashed across my mind like lightning.
As “Tell Me Your Wish” became more popular, Girls’ Generation got busier. To match the title of the song, many variety shows where Girls’ Generation had to grant someone’s wish were aired.
In various talk programs and shows, Girls’ Generation had to sing, dance and laugh for the viewers. It’s true that their popularity is something to thank for, but the girls could not stay at home with their families and had to always smile even though they are at the age where they should stay home and be spoiled.
I didn’t want to tell them to grant someone’s wish again. I wanted to know the wishes the girls’ themselves had in their minds, and I wanted to reverse the situation and grant their wish, even if it’s a small, trivial thing.
I thought of a program called “Change” in which I was in charge of last year. The participant who became another person with special make-up almost always named their families when they were asked who they wanted to meet first. The people who called their family are the people they always live with, fight with, and upset the most. Despite these facts, when the participants, such as Hyori, Hoyoung, Tablo and Ok Dongja [Editor's note: Ok Dongja is a famous comedian] met their families, they always shed tears. It was a very difficult, yet meaningful program to me, who thought that “family”, as a subject, was boring.
We casted maknae Seohyun’s mother through the managers, while keeping it a secret from the girls. Her mother told us that she hasn’t seen her daughter in over a month and that she was sorry for not celebrating Seohyun’s birthday with her last month. She went on to say that she would do anything for her only daughter and eventually agreed to appear on the episode. Since this wasn’t a planned hidden camera, we held meetings after meetings on this until the very last night.
After the recording started, Seohyun’s mother, who was disguised as a regular audience with a mask, wished for Girls’ Generation to teach her daughter aegyo. She also asked for Girls’ Generation to read her letter to her daughter. Girls’ Generation, who only thought that they were granting another wish, started to talk amongst themselves. When Kim Jungeun, the MC, asked maknae Seohyun to hug her, the girls’ eyes were already red.
Seohyun’s mother hugged Seohyun and took her mask off to wish Seohyun a happy belated birthday before giving her the baby diary she had planned to give to Seohyun on her wedding day. The girls all started crying and the MC also turned around to hide her tears.
The recording scene became a silent sea of tears.
When the MC told the girls that they could say something to their mothers if they wanted to, Taeyeon, as expected of a leader, took the lead and said, “The word ‘mom’ is a forbidden word among the members of Girls’ Generation!”
At this time, Tiffany, who was crying the hardest, raised her hand and said, “I…want to talk.”
While we were preparing for the episode with Girls’ Generation, there was something that the managers sincerely requested, and it was to take note of what we say while talking about the girls’ families as it is a difficult topic for some of the girls.
The staff members who knew the basis of the stories were trying hard not to emphasize the word “mom” as they were also worried that the girls might get hurt.
With a smile on her face, Tiffany started by saying, “This is the first time I’m talking about this..” and said a brief, but beautiful hello to her mother. Afterwards, she regained her strength and said this, ”I’m very thankful that you gave me eight very special sisters instead,” and hugged every one of her members. The other members also hugged one another and said words of encouragement while wiping the tears off of each other’s face. Seohyun’s mother also hugged each of them and said that Seohyun learned a lot of aegyo because of the eight older sisters. Even me, who was watching in the sidelines and directing the cameras, became emotional and couldn’t stop my voice from shaking.
Honestly, even while writing this at this moment, my eyes are tearing up. One of my sunbaes clicked his teeth at me and said, “Tsk tsk, what are we going to do if the PD has such a soft heart…”
After the talk, during the break time, we made an emergency announcement. There were a lot of reporters in the audience, so we told them that this is a very private matter, hence it may not be aired and requested for them to not publish it in the news. After that, I ran to their waiting rooms because I was worried about them. I had been trying to give them a special gift in the beginning, but all I could think of was how sorry I was now.
With a worried face, I started looking for Tiffany. “Fany-ah!” Surprisingly, Tiffany ran up to me and hugged me at once. Tiffany, who was still teary-eyed, held both of my hands and said, “Thank you PD-nim~!” The girl smiled at me and said that she was really happy and thankful for a wonderful gift and that I may include this in the episode; to a person who was still sorry for what he did.
For this girl, I was very thankful, proud, sorry and my heart ached so much. Fany-ah..and kids.. thank you and I’m sorry…
Honestly, I don’t really know about these kids. I’ve never even met them properly until this time. Just like every other samchon fan, I was just pleased by the cuteness the name, “Girls’ Generation”, gives off. However, these girls became very dear to me because of this recording session. Not as a fan and not as a man, but as an older brother who wishes that the young and fragile sisters don’t ever get hurt.
I’m sure that I am delusional but it feels like I’ve really become one of their family members. As the group’s popularity increases, it is very natural that there will be different kinds of rumors. There is a lot of talk about loners, fights and curses about Girls’ Generation, but one thing I can say out of experience, is the fact that those words are garbage and not even worth a second thought.
To each other, the members of Girls’ Generation are like blood sisters, loving mothers and beautiful daughters. The group of girls was actually a family named “Girls’ Generation”. Through this recording session, I was introduced to a loving family.
It started with “Let’s grant Girls’ Generation’s wishes” in the beginning, but in the end, I received a big gift from Girls’ Generation.

The Best of the Best: Top 5 Non-Title Tracks

Hello and welcome to the fifth edition of “The Best of the Best”: a countdown of the best in Girls’ Generation music, CFs, and related media. While this time I went over the Top 5 Non-title tracks, you guys can tell me what you want to see next by voting in the poll at the end of the article. More votes are always better, so please tell me what you want! As for this edition, read through my explanation for each choice then leave your own opinions of the best non-title tracks in the comments section! I’ll leave a link to the respective song at the start of each explanation. Let’s start shall we?
5. Etude
Following the smash hit Genie on their second mini album, “Etude” certainly brings something both different and similar to the table. Reminding us of the cuter songs that the girls were known for in the past, it mixes a happy atmosphere with an upbeat tone and catchy rhythm. While I liked it a lot when the second mini album was first released, Etude  has really blended in with some of the girls’ other songs as the years have passed, not really showing its staying power. Its nostalgic value certainly makes it stand out on a mini-album which had a little bit of everything, but doesn’t make it too special on this countdown compared to the other unique tracks.
4. Destiny

“Destiny” brings a distinct electronic sound and is a track that is different from the rest of the songs on the “Gee” mini-album. The song definitely goes a step further by showing the variety and potential that the girls are capable of. While the song is fast paced, the bridge in the middle showcases the amazing vocals the group is known for, creating a perfect mix. The track has its set of advantages in terms of its sound and use of vocals, but lacks a special beat or catchy rhythm that could propel it higher on the countdown.
3. Oscar
“The Boys” was an album chock full of tracks that were more positive and very upbeat, so the few tracks that didn’t follow that trend and tried to be different stood out more for me. “Oscar” is a perfect example of a track that tried to do something unique and inevitably succeeded. The song starts off with a beat that signals it is far more darker and aggressive than many of the other happy-go-lucky songs that fill the album. The song does well in showing how the girls are growing from bubblegum pop to more mature fare. An addictive chorus which spells out the namesake of the song, coupled with a climax full of a deep electronic sound, make “Oscar” an electrifying track which surely deserves the number three place on our countdown.
2. I’m In Love With The HERO
“I’m In Love With The HERO” begins with a pulsating beat that is unlike anything you’ve ever heard; a repetitive string of words with a booming sound that blows you off your feet. The catchy beat seems to shift its tone at a breakneck pace but uses that swift rhythm to its utmost advantage by sounding crisp with each transition in the track. While electronic sounds and autotune do dominate what seems like most of the song, it doesn’t deteriorate the quality of it. The track selectively utilizes the girls’ full vocal power during key sections of the song, which creates an amazing mix with the song’s addictive beat. This song would be number one if not for the fact that the top song on this countdown does everything better, with more to boot.

Last Episode of ‘Girls’ Generation and Dangerous Boys’ to Be Broadcast Next Week

The last episode of jTBC’s “Girls’ Generation and Dangerous Boys” will be broadcast on March 4th.
Girls’ Generation, who were the boys’ mentors, faced several difficulties throughout the show but did not falter. Even though one of the boys left halfway through the show, the members of Girls’ Generation continued to give warm advice and cold warnings to the boys even when they were not recording for the show.
With the help of Girls’ Generation’s earnest hearts, the boys improved tremendously and not only impressed the girls, but the staff as well.
With the first recording session happening way back on November 20th of last year, Girls’ Generation could not hide their sadness upon saying their goodbyes. Sunny, in particular, mentioned that Kim Hwehoon even appeared in her dreams, while Seohyun, who received the nickname “Enraged Seohyun”, showed tears during the last interview session and said, “I think I did poorly with the kids but I have also learned a lot through this program.”
Even the boys looked like they couldn’t believe that they were actually saying goodbye to each other, and one of them even shed tears after filming ended.

Girls’ Generation Number One on Forbes Korea Power Celebrity Top 40 for Two Consecutive Years

The nine member girl group Girls’ Generation has been chosen as Korea’s best “Power Celebrity” for the second year in a row (since 2011). Forbes Korea published their first issue nine years ago, and this was the result of the “Korea’s Power Celebrity 40″ survey, where a celebrity is defined as a famous person who is well known amongst the general public. Forbes Korea releases forty people out of a total of one hundred based on the categories of earnings, influence, reputation, and professionalism. This follows the same survey method of Forbes “Celebrity 100″ in the US.
Girls’ Generation landed in the number one spot this year. They came in first and second place in the categories for number of articles published, and television commercials plus broadcasted activities respectively. Girls’ Generation is also the most wanted television guest. They shot 36 television commercials, which helps celebrities raise their fame. Their third album, “The Boys”, which was released last year, sold 380,000 copies, making it the best selling album of 2011.

Girls’ Generation’s New PV for ‘Time Machine’ to Feature Imada Kouji

Girls’ Generation’s first Japanese album, “Girls’ Generation”, which was released on June 31st 2011, reached a shipping record of one million copies, a first in the history of Japan as a Korean artist .  There will be a new music video to continue the rapid advancement of Girls’ Generation into Japan. The music video will be for their new song “Time Machine”, and comedian Imada Kouji will appear in the video.
“Time Machine” is a new ballad song that was recorded for last year’s repackaged album release on December 28th, titled “Re:Package Album: Girls’ Generation ~The Boys~”. On February 25th, the song will also be promoted in Girls’ Generation’s CF of UHA Mikukato “E-ma Nodoame”.
Imada Kouji is a self-proclaimed Girls’ Generation fan and leads in knowledge and enthusiasm in the entertainment world, so the staff of Girls’ Generation made the offer to include him.
On the day of shooting, which fell on Valentine’s Day, Imada was not concerned that it was a day off and continued on with the schedule. He was fully motivated and looked forward the challenge. Imada Kouji was often seen as a strong man, but for this he passionately acted out the role of a weak man. He was to cry alone in a room while remembering about the unforgettable past.
Imada Kouji commented on his performance and said, “This is my happiest job ever since a couple of years ago. Before the manager finished talking, I enthusiastically said, ‘I’ll do it.’ The filming was really fun. I gave it my all. When I saw the proposal written with ‘Girls’ Generation Tenth Member’, I felt complete like cutting the goal-tape. I want to receive a business card that says ‘Girls’ Generation Tenth Member’. As one of the fans of Girls’ Generation in the entertainment world, I’m glad they offered me the spot. To the other entertainers who are fans of Girls’ Generation, I feel like I have to tell them the stage has changed (laughs).”
Furthermore, the music video for “Time Machine” is set to be released in early March. For the girls, this music video concept is something that they have not done so far and it seems that the video was influenced by the atmosphere of the teaser. The thirty-second version of the teaser can be seen onGirls’ Generation’s official Japan Facebook page which was opened on February 24th, while the fifteen-second version will be broadcast on Japanese TV on February 25th. You can look up the translations of “Time Machine” in Soshified’s Lyrics Center Section  and also check out the thirty-second version of the teaser below.

Girls’ Generation Going Mainstream: Is it a Good Thing?

There’s no denying that Girls’ Generation’s popularity has exploded over the past several years. They have set records in Korea, conducted a large-scale and incredibly successful concert tour in Japan, and made recent advances into the American market. They have reached a level of global popularity that is rare for a K-pop artist. But along with that enormous popularity comes certain challenges. As they become more popular and well-known around the world, should they stick close to their established image in order to hold on to people who are already their fans? How should they change their image or approach in order appeal to new fans and new markets? Questions like these have brought me to what is ultimately the focus of this editorial: Has Girls’ Generation become too mainstream, and how can one define the word “mainstream”?
The question of whether or not Girls’ Generation has become too mainstream and popular was brought to my attention recently. I was shopping at a convenience store near my house, and one of the workers at the store stopped me when she saw that I was wearing a Girls’ Generation hoodie. She revealed to me that she is a fan of the girls and that she listens to their music. I was extremely excited to have a chance encounter with a fellow SONE, especially since I live in the United States, where K-pop is not popular or even known amongst the general public. After talking together for several minutes, the convenience store worker said, “I feel like they’ve only become popular lately. I don’t like it when things become too mainstream and popular. I liked it better when people didn’t know about them”. As soon as she said that, my excitement about having a random and unexpected encounter with a SONE evaporated. I walked away feeling disappointed that she ended up sounding like a hipster proudly proclaiming that she liked them before they were cool.

But that particular incident got me thinking. It’s definitely true that the girls are more popular now than they’ve ever been, but is it even possible that they could be too popular and too mainstream? Also, how can the word “mainstream” even be defined? There are several different perspectives, and different people could potentially view this in wildly different ways. Is their “mainstream” status just a reflection that they’re becoming so popular that they’re well-known all over the world? Or is it an increasing need for the girls to fit within some sort of socially accepted musical standard in order to become true global superstars?
One of the ways that this dilemma can be viewed is that the girls are simply becoming so popular everywhere that soon enough they’ll be mentioned in the same breath as Lady Gaga or Katy Perry as artists who are well-known all around the world. I consider myself a SONE, and the thought of Girls’ Generation reaching that level of worldwide recognition is unbelievably exciting to me. I couldn’t possibly think of that as a bad thing. I don’t care that I didn’t enter the fandom at the very beginning. I don’t care that I can’t say, “I liked them before they were cool and well-known”. If they truly became one of the world’s top musical stars, I would feel nothing but pride. If the definition of “mainstream” is simply being popular and well-known, then in my mind there is no such thing as “Girls’ Generation is too mainstream”.

The other possible definition of “mainstream” that I thought of is a bit trickier to analyze. It’s no secret that Girls’ Generation has constantly reinvented their image over the years, but do they need to conform to some socially acceptable Western standards in order to have a broader appeal? Some would argue that the girls have already done just that by having their newest promoted song produced by Teddy Riley, a well-known American music producer. Is it a bad thing if the girls have to change into something different in order to appeal to the global market on a greater level?
To answer that question, I look back upon the girls’ history. They have remained the same fresh, hard-working, and humble girls that they were when they debuted, but their musical concepts have been constantly changing. They went from the cute image of “Kissing You” and “Gee” to the sexy style of “Genie”. The girls energized oppas as cheerleaders in “Oh!” but then immediately followed that up with the dark and powerful “Run Devil Run”. With every reinvention, they grew more popular. Rather than improving themselves by sticking to the same formula and refining it to the point where every change is minimal, Girls’ Generation has improved themselves by constantly challenging themselves and not sticking to the norm. Almost every time we see them, the concept is new and different. I see this characteristic as an asset in their quest to conquer America and the Western musical scene, where a common complaint is that pop music all sounds the same nowadays.
The ability to stand out as something new and different is something that the girls can take advantage of. The girls have proven that their popularity can continuously increase despite not sticking to any particular musical standard. I see this as an indication that going against the grain and avoiding the common mainstream image that the West is accustomed to would actually work in Girls’ Generation’s favor. If the girls are able to catch the attention of people by showing an image that is unlike anything they’ve ever seen before in the West, their popularity could truly take hold once those people dig deeper. One of the girls’ greatest strengths is the fact that they’ve always remained true to themselves. Their true personalities always shine through whether they are on stage, on a television show, or interacting with fans. As time has passed, they have remained the same hard-working and humble girls. SONEs can’t stop loving the girls because they truly are people with beautiful hearts, strong ambitions, and an unrivaled work ethic. In short, Girls’ Generation global popularity could grow because their music is so different and so far outside the norm of what Western audiences are used to, but it could be cemented because the girls themselves are always the same.

There are many differing perspectives on what a label like “mainstream” could possibly mean, and even more so when it is used to describe what Girls’ Generation is and where they are going. It’s a strange contradiction, but I see Girls’ Generation as both mainstream and not, and that they should continue to become more mainstream, and yet not. When you define the “mainstream” label as simply being popular, it’s clear to see that their popularity is at an all-time high, and I hope that it continues to grow. But in order for that popularity to increase, I hope that they avoid falling into a conventional way of doing things. If Girls’ Generation continues to follow their own unique formula of not having a formula at all and not conforming to any particular standard, I think that their success has only just begun.

‘Wild Romance’ Airs Its Final Episode

On February 23rd, Jessica’s first drama, “Wild Romance”, came to an end. Jessica appeared in ten out of sixteen episodes as Kang Jonghee, a painter who bites people she cares about, holds her liquor, loves her cat, and is even bipolar. Despite intense overseas schedules in New York, Paris and Bangkok, she delivered solid performances in each episode, exceeding expectations for her first time acting.

Though it had an overall straightforward plot, “Wild Romance” featured unpredictable, and often unbelievable, twists and turns that gave Jessica many chances to show off her acting talents. Fans were especially delighted, and sometimes horrified, to see Jessica act in a variety of scenes involving holding a baby, having a seizure, washing a cat, painting, and even kissing. Not known for her cooking skills, one of Jessica’s most challenging acting scenes came in episode twelve, where her character cooks a meal. After watching her act in these different situations, many viewerscomplimented Jessica on her ability to portray both a light and dark side to her character.
Jessica also sat down for several interviews about “Wild Romance”, one of which she described the drama as a learning experience and also thanked her seniors Lee Dongwook and Lee Siyoung. Having proven that she can adapt to performing in a variety of scenes while juggling activities with Girls’ Generation, Jessica will hopefully soon be able to apply what she has learned from “Wild Romance” in future dramas. Until then, we will look forward to Jessica’s return to the Korean drama scene.

Girls’ Generation Wins Two Awards at the First Gaon Chart KPOP Awards

On February 22nd, Girls’ Generation took home two awards on the First Gaon Chart KPOP Awards show.
Girls’ Generation won the Oricon Chart Special Award for their chart topping first Japan album. While all the members were not in attendance, Yoona arrived from a previous schedule just in time to accept the award. Taeyeon, who was MC for the awards show, also said a few words thanking fans.
Gaon awarded albums by quarters of the year, and Girls’ Generation won the Album of the Year Award for the fourth quarter with “The Boys”. Yoona returned to the stage and thanked fans all around the world for their love and support, and also said that she missed her members. In a cute moment, Yoona complained that Taeyeon was too far away since she was at the MC podium off to the side of the stage, but both Taeyeon and Yoona still did their cheer “Right now, it’s Girls’ Generation!” along with the many fans in attendance.
Girls’ Generation had the highest selling album by a Korean artist on the Oricon chart in Japan and highest selling album on the Gaon chart in Korea in 2011.
A stylist for Girls’ Generation, Seo Sookyung, also won a Style Award for her work with “The Boys”.
Congratulations to Girls’ Generation on their wins! Check out the acceptance speeches below.

Taeyeon Continues to MC “Gaon Chart Awards” Despite an Injury

Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon received praise when she injured her toe and continued to emcee the Gaon Chart Awards.

Taeyeon injured her toenail while she performed her MC duties with Joo Younghoon in “The First Gaon Chart K-pop Awards” that was held at the Samsung Card Hall in Blue Square.
Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon and Yoona accepted the “Special Oricon Award” on behalf of all the members. After Yoona’s acceptance speech, she asked Taeyeon to deliver her own speech. At this time, Taeyeon said her acceptance speech despite still being in the MC stands.
At this, Joo Younghoon explained, “Taeyeon has ripped her toenail during the awards and she is still doing her duties as an MC while fighting through the pain.”
Taeyeon replied by saying, “You don’t have to say that with so much detail. I’ve only gotten hurt a little bit,” and eased the fans’ hearts.
But Taeyeon had to put on slippers instead of high heels because of her injury.
Fans expressed their sadness by saying, “If her toenail was flipped then the pain would be horrible”, “There should be limitations to dancing”, “Taeyeon is really admirable. She didn’t show her pain..She has more than enough rights to be the kid leader”, and, “Make sure to get medical attention for it”.

Vote for Girls’ Generation on ‘Popdust’

The online music magazine “Popdust” is featuring Girls’ Generation in their weekly “Pop-Off”, a poll to decide between two newly discovered and popular songs. This week’s “Pop-Off” pits Girls’ Generation’s “The Boys” against One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful”.
